Expecting mothers or soon to be mothers who plan on visiting Central and South America, and any of the 14 areas in the Carribean are cautioned to consider rescheduling, due to surge of microcephalic infant births resulting from Zika virus infection. If avoidance of travel is not possible, steps must be taken to avoid mosquito bites if visiting any of the following nations: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Savador, Panama, Columbia, Brazil, Venezuela, Paraguay, Suriname, French Guiana, Haiti, and Martinique.
This virus is likely to spread. Thousand of cases of microcephalic infant births were reported in Northeastern Brazil relating to infection during pregnancy. Furthermore there is no specific treatment of vaccine that has been identified.
Symptoms to look out for include maculopapular rash, severe onset of fever, arthralgia, and conjunctivitis. These can occur in concurrence with each other or independently.
